Every year on January 24, India marks National Girl Child Day, a dedicated occasion focusing on the challenges faced by girls and gender inequality. The day was established in 2008 by the Ministry of Women and Child Development. Since then, it has become an annual event celebrated throughout the country with a specific theme each year.

National Girl Child Day typically involves organized programs and awareness campaigns, such as Save the Girl Child, launched by the Government of India in targeted regions like Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Bihar, and Delhi.

The day, observed on January 24, commemorates the anniversary of the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (BBBP) Scheme. Launched on January 22, 2015, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BBBP scheme aims to address the declining child sex ratio and is a collaborative effort involving the Ministry of Women and Child Development, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and the Ministry of Education.

As part of last year's celebration, the Ministry of Women and Child Development encouraged widespread participation, urging states, union territories, and districts to organize activities related to appreciating the value of the girl child from January 18 to January 24.

The objectives of celebrating National Girl Child Day annually in India are threefold. Firstly, it aims to spotlight the inequalities faced by girls in the country. Secondly, it seeks to raise awareness about the rights of girl children. Lastly, it aims to generate awareness regarding the significance of girls' education, health, and nutrition.
