Education Ministry Releases AISHE 2021-22 Report: More Students Enrolling, Gender Gap in STEM

The Ministry of Education (MoE) recently published the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) 2021-2022 report. This survey, initiated in 2011, aims to collect comprehensive data on various aspects such as teacher and student enrollment, along with infrastructure details.

The report encompasses 1,162 universities, 45,473 colleges, and 12,002 stand-alone higher education institutions nationwide. Notably, the latest AISHE report reveals an increase in higher education enrollments from 4.14 crore in 2020-21 to 4.33 crore in 2021-22. Key findings from the AISHE 2021-22 Report include:

A 26.5% growth in higher education enrollments, reaching 4.33 crore in 2021-22 from 4.14 crore in 2020-21.
Female enrollments in higher education surged from 57 lakh in 2014-15 to 2.07 crore in 2021-22, marking a 32% increase.
Female Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) has consistently surpassed male GER for the fifth consecutive year since 2017-18.
A substantial 44% increase in SC student enrollments since 2014-15, with a noteworthy 51% rise in female SC student enrollments in 2021-22 compared to 2014-15.
An impressive 80% surge in the enrollment of female ST students in 2021-22.
A 22% rise in the number of female faculty and teachers compared to 2014-15.
Establishment of 341 universities and university-level institutions since 2014-15.
Additionally, the AISHE study reports that 46,878 international students from 170 countries have enrolled in various courses in India. Notable countries include Nepal, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, the USA, and the UAE, with 13,126 students from Nepal and 3,151 from Afghanistan.

UGC Chairman Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar, commenting on the AISHE Report 2021-22, highlighted gender disparity in STEM fields. He emphasized the need to address the lag in female participation in engineering and technology and outlined the UGC's commitment to challenging societal stereotypes. The commission aims to promote role models in these fields and create an encouraging environment for young women pursuing science and technology aspirations.
