As the concluding moments of 2023 approach, it is opportune to contemplate the transformative measures instigated by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). In an effort to make education more adaptable, comprehensive, and inclusive, CBSE has implemented several initiatives, ranging from the restructuring of the board exam pattern to the diversification of language options. Here, we delve into the significant updates introduced by CBSE:
Revamped Exam Pattern Emphasising Competency-based Learning
CBSE has orchestrated a paradigm shift in the examination format, accentuating application-based queries aimed at evaluating students' practical comprehension and problem-solving prowess. The question papers will witness an augmentation in competency-based questions, fostering preparedness for real-world challenges and nurturing critical thinking skills imperative for competitive examinations.
Termination of Division and Percentage Systems
A progressive decision unveiled by CBSE in 2023 involves the discontinuation of overall divisions, distinctions, and aggregates for class 10 and 12 students appearing in the 2024 board exams. This strategic shift intends to alleviate the pressure associated with a singular score, encouraging students to excel in individual subjects. Moreover, the move seeks to cultivate profound understanding while discouraging rote memorization.
Introduction of Exam Flexibility from the Next Academic Session
In response to appeals for increased flexibility, CBSE has introduced the option of two board exams annually, commencing from the academic session of 2024-25. This dual-exam provision affords students the opportunity to sit for exams twice a year, enabling score improvement. The highest score obtained by students will be considered for college admissions and other purposes, mitigating the stress linked to a single high-stakes exam.
Enhanced Linguistic Diversity for Inclusive Education
In a pivotal stride towards inclusivity, CBSE has expanded the array of languages accepted as mediums of instruction. Students can now choose their preferred medium from a list of 22 regional languages, promoting better comprehension and understanding when learning in their mother tongue. This initiative strives to create a conducive academic environment for students from diverse linguistic backgrounds.
Early Release of Sample Papers for Transparent Preparation
To augment transparency and aid students in early preparations for board exams, CBSE released sample papers and marking schemes on March 31, 2023. These materials cover all subjects offered in classes 10 and 12, providing valuable insights into the exam pattern and assessment criteria, facilitating student preparation from the commencement of the academic session.
Special Arrangements for Olympiad Participants and Athletes
In a bid to foster sports and Olympiad participation, CBSE has implemented special arrangements for students engaged in these events during exams. Special exams will be conducted for students whose exam dates coincide with national and international sports events, as well as international Olympiads, accommodating travel dates for these events in 2024. This initiative aims to strike a balance between academic pursuits and extracurricular passions.
These notable changes implemented by CBSE in 2023 underscore the board's unwavering commitment to fostering educational flexibility and holistic learning.
